03 · The honest comparison

“Can’t I just buy a plate and rig it myself?”

You can. Plenty of people do, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what it actually costs you.

$189.99 is one purchase. Paper targets are a subscription you pay every single trip.

Bare plate + hardware store

  • Chain fatigues and snaps mid-session
  • Bolt heads that catch spall instead of shedding it
  • Unknown steel, “AR500” with no hardness spec
  • No stand, or a stand that walks in wind
  • A trip to town every time something breaks

This kit

  • DuPont Kevlar instead of chain, same fiber as body armor
  • Grade 10.9 bolts, smooth heads facing the shooter
  • Certified AR500 at 477–534 Brinell, 3/8" thick
  • Engineered to swing, so energy becomes sound
  • Every single part replaceable, shipped from Idaho

04 · Durability

Not all steel is the same

AR500 is abrasion-resistant plate hardened to roughly 500 Brinell. Mild steel dents on the first hit, and those craters start throwing fragments back at you. Hardened plate does not deform, pit out, or spall the way mild steel does.

3/8" is the sweet spot: heavy enough for centerfire rifle at distance, light enough that one person still wants to carry it. Shot at correct distances, this plate outlasts the straps holding it up, and when the straps go you replace a $39 strap, not a $170 target.

What wears out first

The powder coat, then the straps. Repaint with the magnetic stencil and replace a $39 strap set. The plate keeps going.

When to retire a plate

Any crater deeper than 1/8", a cracked edge, or a through-hole. Deformed steel throws fragments you cannot predict.

Straight answers

How long will it actually last?

Shot at safe distance with the right calibers, 3/8" AR500 takes thousands of rounds with surface marking rather than damage. What kills steel targets is shooting rifle too close. That is what craters a plate. Keep rifle at 100 yards or more and the plate outlives the straps and hardware around it, all of which we sell individually.

What happens if I shoot it too many times?

A well-used plate looks pocked and the paint goes first. Repaint it with the magnetic stencil and keep going. Retire any plate with a crater deeper than about 1/8", a cracked edge, or a through-hole, because deformed steel throws fragments in directions you cannot predict. Replacement gongs ship on their own.

Is it safe? Will it spall or ricochet?

Every steel target throws fragments; the job is controlling where. Hardened AR500 stays flat so rounds break up and shed sideways instead of bouncing off a dent. Hang it so it swings freely, angle it slightly downward, keep pistol shooters at 10 yards and rifle at 100 yards minimum, and everyone wears eye protection. Our bolt heads are smooth and face the shooter for that reason.

Can one person carry it?

Yes. The gong alone is 28 lbs and comes with a carry strap. The complete system is 52 lbs total and is built around one person hauling it in one trip. It is heavy the way a full cooler is heavy, not the way furniture is heavy.

How much is shipping, really?

Steel is heavy and we will not hide it in the price. Accessories under 2 lbs ship flat at $12.90. Plates, stands and systems ship Ground, priced by weight and distance from Idaho, roughly $18 to $40 for a gong and $26 to $59 for a full system. Use the ZIP estimator in the buy box and you will see the same number at checkout. Lower 48 only for now.

What if I change my mind?

Unused items in original packaging can be returned under our Return Policy. Read it in full before ordering. If a shipment shows up damaged, email within 7 days and we deal with the carrier. Individual parts are always replaceable, so a worn strap never means a new target.
